The crane operator had failed to secure the crane properly before leaving the site for the day.  The crane then slowly listed and crashed into the building at 80 Maiden Lane with workers spending all night to remove and fix it.

This accident brings to light the importance of proper training for crane operators.  This accident occurred exactly two years after a pair of fatal crane accidents left nine people dead. The Rigger who was responsible for securing the crane that fell faced seven counts of  manslaughter but was acquitted at his trial. These accidents were highly publicized and uncovered corruption among a government official who was caught accepting bribes in return for falsifying crane operators licenses. Since these accidents, the Department of Buildings had increased it's training requirements for crane operators and inspectors since the collapse.
